The Oregon Reproductive Health Equity Act is under scrutiny in Oregon before U.S. District Judge Mustafa T. Kasubhai. The federal judge on Tuesday, April 14th, has sided with Oregon Right to Life and their claim that health benefit plans should not be responsible for abortions or contraceptives, and apparently violates the U.S. Constitution and is ‘not neutral’.
Abortion care is fundamentally patient care. Protecting women’s reproductive rights is not only lawful under the U.S. Constitution—it is essential to honoring their dignity, autonomy, and humanity. Denying these rights is a grave injustice, stripping women of both their value as patients and their power as autonomous individuals. We must stand up for women’s rights and refuse to tolerate such threats to their freedom.
How much more can we take as citizens in this nation when it comes to our rights being violated? This is just another sign that we need to take this fight against fascism and authoritarianism seriously and do everything in our power to preserve the rights of all citizens within this nation.
Check out a video of me here interviewing OHSU students and their thoughts on Judge Kasubhai’s ruling.
